Bands In The Van
Bands In The Van is where heavy music meets the open road.
Hosted by Tara, this video podcast takes place inside a self-converted camper van, where members of emerging deathcore, metalcore, hardcore, and death metal bands step away from the venue for honest conversations before the show.
From touring stories and band life to completely unhinged questions that reveal each member’s personality, every episode goes beyond the music to showcase the people behind it.
Because sometimes the best part of a band isn’t just what happens on stage, it’s who they are when the amps are off.
New episodes feature individual interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, live footage, and a look at the journey of independent artists carving their own path.
So climb in, buckle up, and come meet the next generation of heavy music.
Stay heavy. We’ll see you down the road.

I try to play Calm as a Cucumber, but yeah, I get super nervous. You'll be great. Oh, thank you. Welcome to another episode of Bands in the Van. I am here with a new band today, Rivera. Did I say it right? I keep saying it wrong. No, you said it's right. I keep thinking of like the French Riviera because I want to go spend the summer on the French Riviera. And so that's where my brain keeps going every time I see their name. But this is Nadine, and you are the singer of the band, right? Yes. Well, welcome to my band. Thank you guys so much for taking time out of your busy schedule today to do this interview.
SPEAKER_02Of course. It's so cute in here. I love it.
SPEAKER_06Oh, thank you. Thank you so much. All right. So you guys are a three-person band. You have a singer. The drummer is the one that's not here yet, right?
SPEAKER_02No, our drummer is over there.
SPEAKER_06The other one's a guitarist.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Okay. So he's at CVS.
SPEAKER_06He's at CVS. Pick us up some things. Um, so you guys uh don't have a bass player. Is so are you guys looking for a bass player? I have a bass back here. I haven't learned it, but maybe one day when I learn I can join advance.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, yeah, perhaps. Um, but I mean for us, um, we yeah, I mean, we've been looking for someone to like fill the other side of the stage for some time and it just kind of worked out. We'll see. We'll see how it goes.
SPEAKER_06Because I am sure there is gonna be some bass player someday watching this, I hope. And there might they might be like, I'm looking for a band to join. So just saying, just make sure you follow their socials because they might post about it that they're looking for somebody. All right, so I've been asking this question to all the bands because it is just super interesting the the various answers that I get. So, from a scale of Metallica to Cannibal Corpse, I know, so random, right? Like, how famous do you want your band to get? Um, and this is about you personally. Don't worry about the other band members because they're gonna have their own thoughts, right? But just like how famous do you want your band to get?
SPEAKER_02Um, well, of course, I want us to be successful and like sustainable. I would like us to get to a point where we're able to live off of this comfortably. So whatever level of fame comes with that is something that we'll just have to deal with.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you just so you want to be able to do this full-time and not have like another job and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I I we all work and I think that we all like what we do, but if we can do both, like if we can get to a point where like we can all have our businesses like separate from uh like our personal businesses separate from our band that also like bring us income. I hope that we can get to a point where we can still where we don't have to sacrifice either.
SPEAKER_06Oh, so you still want to have your normal for me personally.
SPEAKER_02Really? If I can do it from anywhere in the world, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do?
SPEAKER_02I do documentation and data entry.
SPEAKER_06Okay, because I would be like most people that are in bands, they're like, I'm just doing this to pay the bills until my band is making enough income so I can quit my job. Well, we'll see. If you want to keep yours, we'll see.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um interesting. Family too, so I would like to um, you know, stay helping my family as long as I can.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Well, there's there's no wrong answers. That's a very good answer. Very interesting, because let me tell you, if I don't have to do anything else and just this, I would be great. That'd be fantastic for me, right? All right, so uh what is something that most people get completely wrong about being in a what it's like to be in a band actually playing music and writing music is like a very small percentage of everything else that we have to do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um like social media is a big thing, and I was just talking to Lost Trees about this. Um when I started making music like four years ago now, social media, like social media was important, but it's just gotten to a point where we have to post like you have to post like multiple times a day. If you're a smaller band like us, you have to like post multiple times a day on like multiple different platforms, and it's just like we don't have time for all that. Like I don't have time for that. Yeah, it's it's really hard.
SPEAKER_06So I'm so do you notice like if you only let's say post one day or you like skip a day of posting, do you notice like the next time you post like your views are down and stuff like that? You keep up with like the analytics.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I probably should like keep up with the analytics more, but also I don't think that'd be crazy. It does, and that's why I don't want to let it bring me down. So I'm just like, I'm just we're just doing what we can. Yeah, I mean it's it is a lot, like just having uh just having to keep track of everything and then to add social media on top of it, like yeah, time management is also a big thing, and I I feel like I used to be better at time management, but then just the weight of life, it's it's so hard because like I feel very weighed down from just like normal life things, like apart from the band that I have to deal with, and then like of course I'm always thinking about this, so it's like it's hard to prioritize sometimes when there's so many things like high on the priority list.
SPEAKER_06So, would um like you mentioned like just wanting your band to be successful. So, would you say part of the success one day, like what where you would consider your band successful? Would that be like maybe being able to hire a content manager or something to like help unburden some of the load?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that would be that would be awesome. That would be great. But I mean, I guess to consider ourselves successful today would be to um have a good show tonight.
SPEAKER_05Listen, there's all there's all different level of success.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Travis has arrived. Well, I do interrupt yes.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I'm sorry, the guitarist is here. Yay. No, it's okay. I'm gonna interview you guys one at a time. Oh, one at a time? Yeah, yeah. So we're not technically doing it without you. We were I knew you were gonna arrive at some point. Yeah. It's okay.
SPEAKER_02He's back from CVS. He's back from CVS.
SPEAKER_06Did you bring us anything?
SPEAKER_02Did you bring us any snacks?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_04Um, you didn't ask for any snacks.
SPEAKER_02You were supposed to believe if you asked her. You were supposed to get my telepathic message.
SPEAKER_06It was just something that she mentioned, and I was like, oh, hopefully he's bringing us things.
SPEAKER_04You can have a similar monster.
SPEAKER_06No, no, I'm good. I'll stick with water, but thank you. But anyway. Yeah. Um, okay, so what is a challenge that your band has overcome that like maybe your fans don't know about?
SPEAKER_02Um I was gonna say confidence problems, but that hasn't really been overcome.
SPEAKER_06Um, I are you sure? I mean, you could still be working toward it, but it could be better than it was before.
SPEAKER_02Caleb says it's definitely better. So um uh something else.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah. Oh well. Yeah. That's why you're kind of hiding behind the mic.
SPEAKER_02It's okay though. I have Invisalign, I don't want anybody to see it.
SPEAKER_06I wasn't gonna reveal that. I was just going to say she's shy, so she's kind of hiding her face. I was not gonna reveal that.
SPEAKER_02But since she revealed that, this is the third time in my life that I have Invisalign, so I hope that it works this time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I've never had it, so like, why would it be the third time?
SPEAKER_02Because my teeth shift. Do you and I I lost my retainer the last time, so but hopefully I should only have these for six months and be done forever.
SPEAKER_06J what about getting like the permanent retainer so you don't lose it?
SPEAKER_02I think it's like it's like a wire that goes behind your teeth or something, and I don't know if I want that.
SPEAKER_06I don't know anything about it, but I do have a cousin that's a dentist. So if you need uh orthodontist, endodonists, I don't know. He's an endodontist, I think, right? I don't know what that's don't kill me, cousin Wayne. I don't know. I know he does like things, he's like not like just like a regular dentist, he does things. Oh my god, it sounds so bad that I don't know what my cousin does. It's okay. But I love him. Anyway, so yeah, okay, so you've overcome some of your confidence issues and you're you're working on that every day. Yeah. I mean, you seem to be doing fine. I met you earlier today, and you I would not have guessed that you were shy. Oh, yeah, that's good, I suppose. I just I mean, I kind of did just like, are you the singer? And then just started asking you questions. So maybe that could be why you weren't being shy.
SPEAKER_02I just embarked.
SPEAKER_06Did you get my message?
SPEAKER_02Certain situations is easier to um, I don't know, uh be more extroverted, but other times I just wanna so like doing interviews is like not amazing for you. This is nice. I like this. Yeah, thank you.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, this is comfy. But you said you've done interviews before. How were you like those are on the computer? Oh, okay. So were you comfortable with those because you were like in your own room and in virtual? Okay.
SPEAKER_02I mean, some of them, most of them we were together for. Oh, as a as a band.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so what is that like on stage for you? Does when you go on the stage, is it just like you have like a whole different personality?
SPEAKER_02Um, I don't know if I would say that. I just um I just power through it. You too. Um I just I don't know. We j I just play our songs the way that we do at practice, but it's different because there's people. Yeah, there's people and they're shy. So see us and other bands, so I have to I have to perform.
SPEAKER_06That's so interesting. I find that you either have a singer that just like loves the spotlight, or I have talked to other singers that are like introverts. Like I've taken vocal lessons with Alex Kohler of uh Amiona, formerly Chelsea Grin, and uh he's a major introvert. And I was like, I would have not guessed that. Like on the stage, he's a beast, right? Yeah, so I when he told me that he's an introvert, I was like, that is very interesting. I would have never guessed that. Yeah, but I'm like, how do you get on stage? And he does. I mean, he does, you do it, and you're gonna do it tonight. And I hope that I get to see you guys because I've never seen you guys before. So that would be really exciting. Eight o'clock, right? 8:30. 8:30. Okay. Um, so I have like, I like to ask the most random questions because why not? If your music were food, what would it be? Like what style of food would your music be?
SPEAKER_02You know what? The first thing that comes to mind is sushi. Sushi? Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Um is it because you like sushi, or do you really think that your band gives a nice sushi flavor?
SPEAKER_02Well, I think that um I think I mean, I don't want to like come off as like conceited when I say this, but I think that our music is pretty intricate. And um I don't know. I mean, sushi doesn't have to have fish in it, but we're all water signs, so I believe that we all come from the sea.
SPEAKER_06And so most sushi has seaweeds, so that also comes from the sea.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I suppose.
SPEAKER_06And um, but yeah. Cause I I would say that sushi is like the appearance of it is almost simplistic, but then you have like the depth of like the flavors, right? You have like the layers, yeah, yeah. While it looks simple, it is very intricate to roll it and not scare the paper. Yeah, that's a really good food comparison. I like vegan sushi very much. Oh, yeah. Are you vegan? I am, and there is a vegan uh sushi restaurant in downtown St. Pete. Yeah, yeah. That's uh the House of Vegano. Yeah, shout out to them because they are amazing.
SPEAKER_02Sushi doesn't have to have fish, sushi can have like anything, really. Like it can have sweet potatoes, like there's so much that you can do with sushi. And I I feel like that kind of um can compare to how we write music as well, because we have some songs that are super heavy and some songs that are not at all. So it's just like it's a it's all one thing, like it falls under one category, but the range is um.
SPEAKER_06Like what would you what would you define your genre of metal?
SPEAKER_02Um, we say metal core. Um, we also say thal. Um what? Thaw.
SPEAKER_06I I've never heard of that.
SPEAKER_02Thaw? Thaw, no. It's like um, like you know, like humanity's last breath and like Phil Jarta.
SPEAKER_06No. Niche bands. No, the pro my problem is that one of the reasons I started doing this podcast is because I don't know enough niche bands. And I feel like if Tara has heard of the band, they're already commercial. I I was told by a friend that I listen to pop music, like you know, popular music in the metal scene, not like actual pop, but he's like, oh, that's a pop band, pop band, pop band. And I'm like, oh my god, because I like mainstream deathcore. I'm basic, I'm like the basic bitch of deathcore, is basically what he was saying. And I was like, whatever, that's fine. I still love these bands, I don't care.
SPEAKER_02And I don't, I didn't even realize, well, I don't realize how like niche those bands are because like we talk about those bands, or like at least for me, I hear those names like all the time.
SPEAKER_06So I mean, they might not be niche. I musically live under a rock, I feel like, you know, like I like I know like Lorna Shore, but I found out about like Lorna Shore like in 2023 when they were already like getting big. And I was like just found out about them. So that that's how I am. Like I find out about them because like the song comes on like Pandora. So I want to discover newer bands and go to smaller shows. So five years from now, I can be like, I remember when I saw you guys at the Orpheum, right? And now you guys are playing like the Sundome or something, right? Like that no, it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. That's why I'm doing this podcast because I want everybody to meet these, you know, up-and-coming bands. Because I think that you guys are great. I listened to, I mean, I haven't seen you live, but I listened to your music when I saw the flyer. I just went through every band and listened to some songs, and I was like, oh, I like this. I like this. Thank you. I was like, hopefully they'll come interview, and so then I send out the messages. Do you remember what you listen to? I would not have a clue. This was like last week in a parking lot while I was waiting for interviews. So I was like, oh, let me check out this band. Yeah, yeah, that's that's how I how I roll. All right, so I know you guys haven't done many tours, you've done like one, but uh, you did tour in an RV, so that's kind of like a tour bus, kind of, right? Um, you guys were all together. So, what would be your most controversial tour van opinion? Um, like, do you have a rule that's while you're in the RV that like would be considered controversial?
SPEAKER_02I think we need to spend more time in the RV to like um face issues like that because I didn't have any problems. Oh, that's good. Yeah, yeah. Caleb's parents are they were anybody snore? No, we're actually all very silent sleepers, which is amazing.
SPEAKER_06That's lovely. Oh, I love that for you guys.
SPEAKER_02People think I'm dead when I'm asleep.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, my mom used to tell me she would come check on me because she's like, I is she breathing? Yeah, my mom says the same thing about me. Oh, so you sound like a dream to be on a tour bus with.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I would imagine don't snore. I I want to make food for them, so maybe that'll make it better. But but Caleb's parents literally did everything for us, like they made the trip so easy. We literally did not have to do a thing, so I felt like we kind of cheated. I felt I feel like it wasn't supposed to be as easy and comfortable as it was.
SPEAKER_06So ironically, that that's probably for our first tour. That's probably a controversial opinion. Is like you guys went on your first like tour and you didn't struggle like most bands do. And there's probably some bands out there that feel like, oh, well, you gotta pay your dues, and you guys like, no, we we got the hookup. We got the hookup early on.
SPEAKER_02Well, I don't think we'll have we won't have that forever, so we'll see next or we'll probably probably rent our own van and go by ourselves, maybe. We'll see. But also, Caleb's parents wanted to go, like they wanted to go see the spots you guys, yeah.
SPEAKER_06So they did like the driving and stuff. Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah, it was incredible. Shout out to Caleb's parents.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Caleb's parents are amazing, they're the best.
SPEAKER_06Wow. So you guys got like what you guys got the experience of like a bigger band. Of like, I mean, at this stage, right? Most bands are driving themselves. So you guys had a driver and like an essentially kind of like a tour manager almost. And they they like set up everything. Oh, you guys are so lucky, and I'm not hating. I love that for you. And I hope that other bands can experience something like that early on because I do not believe in like the artist struggle. Like, I don't think that people should have to eat ramen noodles just to be like, we started out and we were just, you know, grinding. You can grind and eat sushi, I think.
SPEAKER_02Caleb's dad made these potatoes that were like the best potatoes I've ever had. Um, what else did we eat? Your mom made like a chicken dip thing, and she like she gave it to me with crackers, and it was so sweet.
SPEAKER_06I don't deserve it. But the next why don't you deserve it? Don't say things like that about yourself. See, that's that confidence that we're working on. You absolutely deserve it. Why wouldn't you deserve it? But she wanted to do it. I know. You have to understand when people want to do something nice for you, just accept it graciously because they they're wanting to do it. Sometimes people do things because it makes them happy to be able to provide food for you, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was just really sweet the way that she did it. She was like, There's this chicken left. Do you want some with crackers? And I was like, sure, why not? Yeah, girl, come on.
SPEAKER_05Like, you have somebody wanting to do nice things.
SPEAKER_02And I was able to work too on on my computer and on the RV.
SPEAKER_06It was so you see, and why wouldn't you think you deserve this treatment? Like, you're still working hard and somebody's helping you out so that you're not having to be overwhelmed with everything. Like and I can speak from experience. I do everything by myself, so I am like every day overwhelmed with life.
SPEAKER_02So no, I was super.
SPEAKER_06If somebody could give me some dip with cracker, yeah, that'd be great. Thank you. Not chicken, but some other veggie dip or something. I don't know. Well, I guess that's a controversial opinion right there. You guys aren't in the dirt. I like it. Grinding it out all day. All right, so who out of the three of you would you say works the hardest behind the scenes?
SPEAKER_02No, I I would say you you do like so much.
SPEAKER_06Caleb, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, Caleb's behind the camera. Caleb thinks that I do, but I think that Caleb does a lot.
SPEAKER_06But it's not about what Caleb thinks. This these are quite Caleb is gonna have his own set of questions, but then he's not there.
SPEAKER_02Well, I don't know. Want to say yeah, it's me. I work the hardest.
SPEAKER_06Do you think though that you do? Like that's the question. The question is for you, it's not for Caleb. Caleb might think you work the hardest. You might think Caleb works the hardest.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I mean, I guess I do more of the communicating and like I do, I am the one who posts.
SPEAKER_06So you manage all the social media and they more can focus on just the band. Yeah. Yeah. So why would you not think that you work the hardest? Oh my god. Okay. I'm seeing this. I'm seeing the confidence thing pop up now. Now it makes so much sense. Girl, you work hard. You gotta have more faith in yourself. Even Caleb is back there, like shaking his head and like, girl, please, like make this up. Like you work really hard. I just do my best. Okay. You're humble. You don't want to like brag on yourself, but maybe you should start. No. I don't want to do that. Listen, listen, here's my thing. Now, I do not listen to this artist. I'm going to say a name, but I just want everybody to know I do not listen to him. I do not agree with anything that he says. But everybody will understand what I mean because he has said this publicly before. I say, I tell myself because I am I'm very camera shy and I also have confidence issues, right? So I tell myself I need to be, I need to think of myself more like the way Kanye thinks of himself. Right? You guys know what I mean, right? Like Kanye is like, he really believes in himself. And I saw a documentary some years ago before he became what he's doing today. And like from the beginning, when he like his name was nothing, right? It was like he had faith in himself. And I go, I don't need to have the ego like egotistical, like where it's like narcissistic. I don't need to be that level. I go, but if I just if I think I'm great the way Kanye thinks he's great, with like half of it, I might do better in life. And so here I am, interviewing random bands. So I am now going to share that knowledge with you. Thank you. You need to, you need to be like the good parts of Kanye and believe in yourself more, not the shitty parts, but the good parts of like him believing in himself. I wish I had a better example, but I'm, you know, I I very honest, I'm camera shy and I get nervous doing these interviews. So a lot of things that I think just like I forget. So please don't come after me, don't cancel me before I even like become anything. Um so yeah, I don't agree with Kanye. I just want to make that very clear. But he's like the first person that comes to mind when I think of like if I just believe in myself a fraction the way that he does, and I think you should as well. Thank you. I mean, I've listened to your music and like you guys are great. And I believe that you guys are going to be bigger than no offense to the Orpheum, but you know, you guys are gonna be bigger than the Orpheum one day.
SPEAKER_02We'll see. Maybe perhaps in yourself, girl. It's a journey. Confidence is a journey.
SPEAKER_06All right. Yes, it is a journey, and I believe that you will get there eventually.
SPEAKER_03Thank you.
SPEAKER_06Um, so do you guys have any upcoming projects or anything that you want to share with your fans?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we have this one song that we wrote that I think is like I think it's like the best song ever. So we're like we're really excited about it? Yeah. I is it out yet? No, it's still like in the mixed process. And then I we love it so much and we just want it to be perfect, and like we just wanna we want it to um portray the story. I g I guess the story thing is more like in my head, so I I really want um like the mix to reflect like the visual that I have for it, and then you want it to work the fans on like a that emotional roller coaster kind of thing, like you want them to feel the story behind. Yeah, yeah. I just want it to be apparent, and I want like certain things to be intentional, so we're still kind of working on that and have a release date yet, but it's coming. It's coming eventually, but and then the music video for it, like we have to like build stuff and like the props and the outfits. I just I really want it to be extravagant, and if we don't make another music video for this current project, like um, I would be okay with that if this song, the mix, and the music video can be perfect.
SPEAKER_05Like that's very intrigued now.
SPEAKER_02That's like all I think about every day.
SPEAKER_06I am so intrigued. I cannot wait to hear the song and see the well. We're playing it tonight. It's the first time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're playing it first.
SPEAKER_06Oh, well, I I really hope that I can make it in. I'm trying to interview as many bands as possible so that I can have an official launch date. Yeah, yeah. At this very moment, this is my second weekend of doing the band interview. So I don't have an official launch date yet. So I'm getting ready to travel, so that's why I'm like trying to time it out with my travels and everything. All right. Well, I really appreciate you doing this interview, especially with you being so shy. She's so shy, it's so cute. Well, thank you so much. I greatly appreciate it, and I can't wait to see you guys tonight. Well, I hope you can make it in there. I'm going to try really hard. 8:30. 830. 8:30. Okay. All right. Well, thank you so much. Thank you. Bye. Caleb.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_06Drummer. Yes. Okay. I am back with the drummer of Riviera. Oh my god, I said it wrong.
SPEAKER_04I got it right the first Rivera.
SPEAKER_06Rivaria. Yes. Gosh, I just want to be on the French Riviera right now. It's really not hard. It's just I keep thinking of being a very good thing. Well, it came.
SPEAKER_00It came from the it came from a French word, so you know.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I could see that. I did take some, I studied French in school. Now I don't remember much of it before. I need to spend some time in France so that I can actually practice. All right, so I I did ask uh Nadine this question, and she had a very interesting answer. Um, so on a scale from Metallica, the cannibal corpse, how famous or how big do you want your band to get?
SPEAKER_00Um, like I said, like like Nadine said about um, I just want to be able to be like sustainable. That to get to that point, I'll be happy. And I like I want to get to a point where I'm just where we can just uh inspire people to make music or inspire or like make people feel a certain way. Just get to a point where I mean I guess you can do that at any level, it really doesn't matter, it just depends on who finds you. But I'm very big on like educating and like I want to I want to like bring more people into music and like share that with people. And I've been inspired by a lot of other bands that are like big. Like I've been inspired like by like Metallica and like a bunch of a huge a bunch of huge bands and a bunch of niche bands. So I just like that's that's I I never really thought about how big I want us to get. I just want to get want to see it to a point where we have a very um dedicated fan base that loves us. And I don't really care how as long as it's sustainable, I don't really care how how big we get. If it's if it's like who no matter no matter how many people it is, like I'm still gonna love that they are so invested into our art.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I'm just like if it'd be great if it'd be if we can get as big as Metallica, that'd be awesome. But like I'll I'll be happy. I'm happy at any level that people want to listen to my art and just want to listen to what we've traded. So I'm just happy to play music, honestly. So it's never something I've thought about. Yeah, so I've so I've never I would like just yeah, just just to be able to be sustainable for sure.
SPEAKER_06But then but after that, I'm just like I just want to I just want to I like to ask this question because there's no right or wrong answer, right? Um, you have people that want to be famous, yeah, right. I I like to use the Kardashians as an example. Like Kim Kardashian has said in many, many interviews that she wanted to be famous, yeah, you know, no matter like what she needed to get there, she wanted to be famous. And there are people like myself, I don't want to be famous.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't I don't really want to be famous either. Like I want to be able to walk around and not have to worry about it. But if like occasionally a really big fan that actually does know me comes up, I'm like, that's great. That's I I love that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, like if you're at if you're at the airport and you know, fans like wearing your shirt and you come up to you, but it's not gonna be like a mop.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like a mob or something, or like paparazzi or then like I don't want to get that famous.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean you would be surprised. There are some people like I interviewed earlier today. Uh you met Jeremiah from Mothbite.
SPEAKER_04I love Jeremiah.
SPEAKER_06He wants to be famous.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I can see that.
SPEAKER_06But I'm like, he has the personality. He has the personality for sure. And so, and it's fine. It's like there's nothing wrong with that. And I hope, and I, and I hope that happens for him. I really do. And so it's interesting to see the different levels of like, you know, what people want versus like people like, I just want to make music, and if I could wear a mask like Slipknot, you know, I would kind of thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do I do like the mask thing too. Like, I like the how Sleep Token and Slipknot started out, they they just had numbers or they don't have they have like fake names. I like that. I like I like mysterious, I like uh so like it'd be cool if like I had a different that I don't in this band, but it'd be cool to have like a different persona that is just dedicated to the art and then I'm on person outside of it.
SPEAKER_06So would you start another band so that you can do that?
SPEAKER_00Maybe I wanna I wanna eventually write my own music, and I don't want to just write my own music because I just love music and I want to get it out. If it doesn't ever go anywhere, that's fine. I just want it, I just want to make make it, and whoever wants to listen to it can.
SPEAKER_06Is it like a different would it be like a different genre than what you guys have now?
SPEAKER_00It'd still be heavy, it'd be just a lot more scary.
SPEAKER_06Okay, so like not so like not quite metal core.
SPEAKER_00It'd be more like more like like death core or like black metal, kind of like death core, kind of like black metal, kind of like uh because I just love anything that sounds terrifying and heavy, yeah. Me too. Just messed up. Like I love that stuff. Like, I love it.
SPEAKER_06Me too, me too. I love it.
SPEAKER_00Like I had a cra I had a crazy huge death core phase, like I love Lorna Shore, I love all those bands like Angel Maker, I love I am still in a heavy death core phase. Like core is awesome, like a kid that just won't grow up, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and my musical taste has not matured, and I don't care about that at all. I listen to everything. I'm totally cool with that. All right, so what would you say is um like being in a band, what do you think is something that most people get wrong from your perspective?
SPEAKER_00Um I mean, a lot of people say that it's like being married to like two or four people or however many. Like that's that that's something just like yeah, the inner workings of it, and kind of like Nadine said, like, there's just so much more to it than the actual music. Like, you want to, of course, just spend all the time you can on just um just the music and just the art, but there is the whole other side, so like the social media and the business side of it, and communication and all that stuff. And I like I think you like asked Nadine this like eventually if we could have people to do those jobs for us, and we all we have to worry about is playing and writing, that'd be that's ideal. That's uh that's what I want to do. I don't want to have to worry about any like I'm not so much a control freak about that stuff, as long as it's being ran well and I can trust the person that's doing it. Yeah, that's uh that is all I really care about. I just want to do my thing, but um, yeah, there's just so much more to it than um just playing music and just like you have to do a lot more things to really get yourself out there nowadays. It's just a different kind of world than it used to be.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. You can't just focus on the music. Yeah, is that challenging sometimes?
SPEAKER_00It it is sometimes challenging just because it's like we're a band, not like a social media, like not like an influencer, but that's just kind of how you have to do it. Almost, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You have to like do skits and just all sorts of marketing.
SPEAKER_00You gotta find you gotta find what um what people on social media like. Like there's a different people bands, different bands do different things, right? They have different kinds of content that they post and stuff like that. It's just hard to find um what works and what doesn't. So yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, so I will say that was one of the reasons I wanted to start this podcast and and interview every band member because I know that fans seeing your personalities on social media will connect more than just like making up skits and chasing viral trends and stuff. So I hope that my my idea works.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's we that's what we've been kind of trying to do is do more content that shows us like personally, because yeah, admittedly, we're not like the I guess the most like funny, entertaining people. Like we're very just mellow people and keep to ourselves alive.
SPEAKER_06You know, I will say a lot. I mean, that's your everyday person, right? We're everyday people. Like, like I know that I'm doing this podcast now, and I think you guys are gonna be like the fifth episode, right? So by the time I'm like, I don't know, 20 episodes in, I have like I'm probably going to be reminding people that like I'm not part of the industry at all. Like I'm doing this from a fan's perspective. Like I'm a fan, I'm not in the music industry, I'm not in the business or whatever people, the scene. So I from a fan's perspective, I don't look at you guys or any band and be like, oh, are they posting any funny skits today? But like every, like every member of the band will have some fan out there that they connect with. And whatever that's going to be, right, somebody's going to connect with something. So like Nadine is shy. And there is people that are gonna be like, oh man, like I am shy too. And they're going to see her doing this interview and being on stage, and it might inspire them to get over their shyness, right? And whatever you know, your thing is, you guys keep showing that side on social media, and you're gonna get people that will connect with whatever it is you're interested in, right? What like what's something that you're super interested in, other than music, right?
SPEAKER_00Me?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah.
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_00I like learning about a lot of different stuff. I uh I'm just I'm just really into music, honestly. I uh I like learning about history, I like uh learning about like fitness.
SPEAKER_06You like learning about like music history?
SPEAKER_00I love learning a little, a little more more like um, I guess more like government, like world history. Okay, stuff like that. What's there's something, there's gotta be something. I can't really think of any of that.
SPEAKER_06I mean, but there's uh there but that's like you're you're not like a one, you know, track person. Nobody is, right? We're uh we all have different interests. But if you showed some of those things, and I wouldn't get like heavy politically or anything, but you showed some of those interests on social media, and you're gonna have people that are like, yeah, I'm into that too. And then now you have fans that are not only connecting with you, but because they connect with you, they're gonna connect through the music. Yeah, that's how I am. Like just seeing some of some of the members from bands that I love online. It's like he seems like a really cool person, right? And then it makes me want to go to the shows, and that was like why I started this podcast because I'm like, yeah, more bands need to show more, which is why I I asked really random questions.
SPEAKER_00No, that's good, that's great.
SPEAKER_06That's why I ask all the random questions because I want the fans to see a different side of you. Um so, what is a challenge that you have overcome that the fans probably don't know about, either you personally or the band?
SPEAKER_00Um probably like the ideans had also just confidence issues. Like I am just very, I think we all are. I know I know what Idean is for sure, but I also am very just hard on myself about everything. Uh-huh. And I was in a band uh a couple years ago, it was my first band that I was ever in. And I we went to record like just one song, and I do like live drums for that and stuff, and that was the most humbling experience of my life. Really? And it just shattered my confidence for a long time. Like it took it took a long time for me to be able to um be uh like happy with things I was doing and like actually be proud of myself and like be like, okay, I'm I'm I'm satisfied with this, and I'm like, yeah, like it's like I'm doing good. Yeah. Because for the and and like for the longest time, like I had to really get used to being able to talk to myself in a good way. Because I'm I'm just really used to talking to myself in a bad way. And but you have to like let yourself you have to let yourself feel you have to be kind to yourself. Yeah, you have to be kind to yourself and you have to let yourself feel your um wins. Yeah. Like you have to realize that like that was a like that was a win, like that, like that was I'm happy that happened, and like I did that, that was great. Like you have to you have to be able to feel that for yourself, or you're always just gonna be wallowing in this just feeling like you're not good enough all the time, and you're never gonna improve if you can't be happy with yourself. Like it's it just it'll stop your improvement, it'll stop, it'll just it'll eat away at you.
SPEAKER_06So if you don't mind me sharing, you told me you're 21. 21 21. Okay, so I think that is a thing that obviously comes with age, right? You'll see that in like the next like 10 years. You'll look back on your 21-year-old self and you'll be like, Wow, like I, you know, I wasn't very confident, but I think the most important part of that story is it was a humbling experience, but you did not give up. No, and there's gonna be a fan out there watching this who's probably about to go in a studio and have that experience that you had, you know, and you kept going. And now, look, you're in another band, and you guys are performing tonight, and I think that's amazing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I remember the first time I went, or the last time I went and recorded live drums. No, I think it was the second time after that. It was probably a couple of years difference, and I did it and it was great, and like it was, I was just like, that's crazy. I felt I felt great about it. Like it was it was really cool to be like, yeah, that was crazy because like a couple years ago I would have never been able to do that, but then now I did it.
SPEAKER_06I think that's fantastic.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's fantastic. Yeah, all right.
SPEAKER_06So, fun questions, you know, my very serious self here. Um, if your music were food, what would it be?
SPEAKER_00Um I was thinking about this question because I know when Aden said sushi, but I want to say something else. I want to say, like, the first thing that came to mind is buffalo wings.
SPEAKER_06Okay. And why buffalo wings?
SPEAKER_00Because buffalo wings, there's just like there's always like it's always the the base is always there. Like you can always tell it's a chicken wing.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But there's different flavors to chicken wings.
SPEAKER_06Unless you're like me and have cauliflower wings.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, those are good. I I like I'll eat those sometimes too. Like sometimes.
SPEAKER_06So yeah, so the the base is chicken and then you can.
SPEAKER_00The base is chicken or cauliflower, and then you can put different sauces, different seasons, different dry rubs, different whatever, like you want to add on to it. And that's kind of like what we do. We always have like we always try to make sure our sound is consistent, but we still want to do different things with our sound. Right. And experiment and try different things.
SPEAKER_06And so you want you want your fans, like when they listen to your music, like, oh, I know that's them. Yes. But this this song or this album sounds slightly different from the class.
SPEAKER_00This one, this one's more spicy, this one's more mild.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but it's not like, but it's still them at the core, right? Because you I'm sure you know there's been many bands where like they have an album where like their sound changed so much, their fans are revolting. Yes. I will not be saying any specific bands because I don't want their fans to think of a few, but actually. Like, what what's the first band that comes to mind?
SPEAKER_00The first band that came to mind, and it's not even that I know they I know they got a lot of backlash for this album. Thornhill, they're a great Australian Metal Core band. They are.
SPEAKER_06I don't know that.
SPEAKER_00Phenomenal. You should definitely look into them. You probably like them a lot more.
SPEAKER_06I think I I think the band that I'm thinking of is a little more mainstream, so I I won't say it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they've gotten a lot bigger. Like I've seen them, I actually saw them a couple years ago here, and they were there was like maybe like 30, 40 people in the building, but now they they tore from sleep token a couple.
SPEAKER_06Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna say the band that I'm thinking of, and I'm gonna bleep it out because again, I don't want fans to come from.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, people don't.
SPEAKER_06But uh Avenge Sevenfold.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they've changed all their sounds. I love but the thing is I I push it.
SPEAKER_06I'm so sorry I don't like their their I don't even know if it's the newest album because I was just like I haven't followed them. But like a friend and I went to their show and they just kind of like I was like, I don't know what's going on right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's very different. It's very different.
SPEAKER_06I I actually do like the I couldn't get through I couldn't get through the whole album.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, at first I couldn't, but then I I listened to it again. I was like, nah, this is actually.
SPEAKER_06I had to like actually listen to it like three separate times. Like I couldn't get through the whole album. And I was driving like a three hour drive, and I couldn't get through the whole thing. I was like, oh my god. Yeah. So yeah, I'm I'm gonna remind you yourself to bleep that out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. But yeah, Thornhill, they had an album called The Dark Pool in like 20, 2018, 2019, maybe maybe a little later. And it's an amazing album. And then they released another album called Heroine. That's that was a lot different, a lot more kind of like a um just a lot of a very different sound. And at first I was very kind of taken aback by it and I didn't love it at first. But then I think I got I became a founder a fan around the time it came out. Okay. So it was like, okay, that I I still feel I still see that there's like an appeal to this. I still see that like there's there's still some really good songs on that album. By no means is it a bad album, it's a great album. It is just very different from what they did with the Dark Pool. And I used to be like, yeah, they should have just stuck to their same sound, but at the same time, I'm just like, I kind of like it when bands are willing to be daring to switch it up.
SPEAKER_06Oh well, I wouldn't say they didn't.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Right?
SPEAKER_06Like Slipknot always sounds like Slipknot. Even like, you know, their Iowa album is like so different from like uh the gray album, I think. I think yeah, I can't remember the all the the names of their albums right now.
SPEAKER_00I'm a nerd about slip knot.
SPEAKER_06I love they got me like into heavier metal. I started I started out in new metal, yeah, and then I did not discover Slipknot until 2012.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06And I was already like really, really late, and I just it went down.
SPEAKER_00I was really late. I was like 2019. Because I was I was also like I was like, I was gonna say you're like so young, I was like, so yeah, and it's funny because I got into metal with like Adventure Sevenfold and a couple other bands, but then I was like scared of Slipknot because I was like, nah, they're too heavy. They're they're yelling at me, and I love it too much, but then I I something like that. Eeyore, what do you think about Eeyore?
SPEAKER_06I love your I would listen to that song on repeat.
SPEAKER_00I love you or uh the New York Scissors?
SPEAKER_06Yes, I I would listen to Eeyore every day on my way to work when I was an accountant and working for corporate, and that was like the song that would calm me down before I went into just the hell that was the place I was working at. Oh god, I would wish bad things on those people. Um, yeah, anyway, so uh so what is your most controversial van tour tour van opinion? Um I know you guys have been in one on one tour and you're in the RV.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um I I also think like you don't have to, if you if you have a way to not like I know some people think it's like a rite of passage to do the van thing. And I do struggle. I do want like personally, I do want to do the van thing at least once because like in a passenger van?
SPEAKER_06In like a yeah, like a like where you guys are like sleeping on the seat, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I personally want to do that just because I think does Nadine want to do that? Probably not. I don't think anyone that wants against it.
SPEAKER_06I was gonna say, like, I think girls might not, yeah. We like better.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I don't I I don't want to, like, I definitely I'll probably do one and be like, no, I never want to do that again. Yeah. But um just so you can say you did it. Just so I can say I did it, and just so I can kind of relate to other people. I'm I don't I'm I'm not saying that everyone has to do it. That's just a personal thing for me. I that I like uh I want to experience that at least once.
SPEAKER_06So would you be okay with like let's say and again Nadine is not saying any of this. I am just thinking like a woman and thinking poor Nadine. Would you like be okay following the RV while she's comfortable?
SPEAKER_00Following? What do you mean following the RV?
SPEAKER_06Like you be in the in the ba in the van with you know the passenger van following the RV while.
SPEAKER_00Well if the RV's there, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna go in a if I have to go in a van. Yeah, I do, but if it if it never if it if I never happens, if it never happens, I'm not gonna be like distraught. I'm not gonna be like, no, we gotta torn a van. We gotta torn a van. No, if if if the RV's available, I'm taking RV. Yeah, why not?
SPEAKER_06I mean, I do think that would that's something that people feel like, yeah, you just have to, you know, be on the grind, and we all started out this way. And there's a lot of people who don't they, you know, they you know, they climb the ladder and they want to pull up the ladder behind them, right? They don't want other bands to not have to sacrifice the way they did. Yeah, or not just bands, just in life, right? We see that all the time. So I think that could be a a pretty good controversial band or tour van idea. So I but I don't want that for you guys. I like your RV that you skipped all of that.
SPEAKER_00And if I could have my parents be on every tour, that'd be amazing. That'd be so awesome.
SPEAKER_06And I mean, that would be like a thing when you guys get big enough, you put them on the payroll and then they would be.
SPEAKER_00No, I wouldn't 100% do that. That sounds good.
SPEAKER_06I mean, if they're if they're making snacks, oh yeah, I think that's great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my little my mom is the best woman on the planet. She's just like always Oh, what's your mom's name? Tiffany Tiffany.
SPEAKER_06Tiffany, oh Tiffany, look at that. You raise a good son here. Oh yay. Well, I love that for you. I love my mom as well. I'm very close with her. So I know you guys were having this stare-off with this question, but who do you think works the hardest behind the scenes?
SPEAKER_00Definitely Nadine.
SPEAKER_06Nadine.
SPEAKER_00Definitely Nadine, because all I really do and all me and Travis are really big into the music, and he does a lot of. I mean, we all I uh but I was also thinking about this. I think we all are almost pretty equal. I think, but I think me and Travis are equal, and then Nadine does like a good bit more just because she's the one that, yeah, handles all the communication, handles a lot of like and all the communication comes with handling the merch or handling um like talking to producers or talking to promoters or talking to other bands about like setting up shows or setting up or setting up interviews, setting up interviews, like yeah, all that stuff that she's the one that handles it. And I think that's not because we won't do it. I think it's just because she wants to. Yeah, and I and I trust her because she's the one with the vision for the band. So her running the social media, her running the just like how everything kind of works, she's also the oldest and most mature. Yeah, and in that way of like business, she's had like the most work experience and like adult life experiences. So I I just trust her to know how to handle stuff, and like she's she writes emails and stuff all day at work, so she knows how to write, like she's how to communicate and all that stuff. So she just wouldn't. Um, I mean Travis just wouldn't. We could definitely do a good bit of it. I just don't think we would do it as good of a job.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and like I mean, there obviously there has to be somebody that's leading, right? So there's nothing.
SPEAKER_00She's definitely the one like she's definitely the one that is pushing the band a lot. If she didn't do a lot of the things she does, we wouldn't be where we are now.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, she does, she doesn't even want to. She did not want to say herself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's gotten she's definitely gotten a lot better, and we need to tell her that she's gotten a lot better more.
SPEAKER_06But like honestly, I blame it on society because society is always like, oh, you can't brag about yourself. And I'm like, no, more people need to brag about themselves. Like, it's okay. If you work hard, say it. Like, there's nothing wrong with that. Yeah. All right, so I know that you guys are uh have a song that's coming out, and Aidine mentioned it. Um, do you want to say anything about the song or the music video, or do you have any other other projects that you want the fans to know about?
SPEAKER_00Um, no, I'm just really up like that. Like she said, I'm really excited for this song. I think it's a really, really sick song, and I think her vision for the music video is amazing, and I'm really excited to release it and do everything with it. Because I think, yeah, it's like I think our best work we've had so far. And it's a part, it's a part of um this thing we're doing with a with like a lot of different singles that we're eventually gonna compile into an album. And I won't say like what it is exactly because I don't think we've publicly said it yet. And I kinda think we're just I think we're trying to kind of have people figure it out themselves, yeah. Which is cool.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I would like the scoop, but it's totally fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's uh but it's like um yeah, I'm just really excited to put that out, and we're just we're just trying to keep releasing consistently, trying to keep grow our growing our keep playing more shows, keep growing our fan base, uh, making more friends and stuff, just playing out more, just having I'm learning that having friends in the scene, man.
SPEAKER_06I hear it's uh it's a big part of things.
SPEAKER_00It's a big part of things.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I'm very lucky that I have one friend in the scene, and that's how I was able to get uh the first five interviews.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, yeah, all honesty.
SPEAKER_06It's tough out here.
SPEAKER_00It's not about watching them, it's about hooking off.
SPEAKER_06I see that. It's tough out here when you're when you're nobody who hasn't launched yet. Well, thank you so much uh for doing this interview. I hope that you enjoyed your time, and I look forward to seeing you guys on stage at 8 30 tonight. Yes, well, thank you very much.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_06I am with Travis, the guitarist for Rivera.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, why can't I say this anymore? I said it before.
SPEAKER_01You want to try again?
SPEAKER_06Rev Reviera. No, that's like the French Riviera. Oh my god, I'm horrible at this. Don't listen to me. I'm with Travis, the guitarist with that band that I can't seem to pronounce anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the past two interviews.
SPEAKER_06No, it's like it's one of those things. Like, if I like I have ADHD, right? So if I say something in my head sometimes and like that's what my brain thinks it is, it's sometimes it's hard for me to switch it to what it should be.
SPEAKER_01I did I do that with uh tubberware.
SPEAKER_06With Tupperware.
SPEAKER_01Tuberware.
SPEAKER_06Tuberware?
SPEAKER_01I call it tuberware. What's like actual tuberware? Yeah, like the little things you put like.
SPEAKER_06Oh, you yeah, you want to say tuberware, but you know that it's not the right way to say it. So you get it. Like, no offense to your brain. No, I don't know. And my brain just really does not want it to happen right now. And I don't know why that is. I'm so sorry. It's would you like to properly say it for a reveria. Raveria. Oh my god. See, now I'll remember Raveria. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. See, I get I and I get nervous for interviews, right? I've never met you. This is our first time meeting. So sometimes when my nerves take over, then my brain is like, we're definitely not doing anything new. Yeah, so stupid. Yeah. So we're just gonna We'll gloss over that. Just guys ignore me. Don't worry about me over here. All right, so you were not here to listen to all the questions, which is good. Um, because these are about what you think, not your band, right?
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_06Um, so from Metallica to Cannibal Quartz, how famous or how big do you want your band to get?
SPEAKER_01Um, can I add a third band into the ranking?
SPEAKER_06Whatever band you want. This is your this is your opinion about your band.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So I I want to be like like sleep token level. You know, how they sell out a whole arena tour. Yeah. And like the first like weekend that tickets were announced and all that, or or however long it was. Um, but like just to their level, not even just like as like a from a financial gain, but as just like an influence kind of there's a lot of people who are influenced by sleep temperature. Oh, yeah. Like I feel like their music has really changed the way I feel about music. And um, I would like our music to do the same.
SPEAKER_06To influence other people, exactly. Yeah, that would be cool. That's a very great answer. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Like, there's nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_01But also, Metallica, they're the best fan in the world. So that's not a bad one.
SPEAKER_06They're also very famous. They're very famous. Like, do you want to be that famous?
SPEAKER_01Well, they're very famous, but I feel like sometimes, like, you you know, you know when you how you get super famous and then your life is just plastered everywhere?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I barely ever see a lot of Metallica like personal stuff out there, even though they're low-key.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they're very low-key, even though they're like at like you know, but I believe like you know, their lives as far as like just everyday shopping. I don't know. Do people would people bother them these days if they're out shopping?
SPEAKER_01Maybe, I don't know. Because I mean, maybe because they've gotten a little older, it's a little harder to recognize them because you know they got the facial hair.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they change their look a little bit. The voice, I would not, I would hear that immediately and be like, that where is he?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Hetfield.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, sleep token. Okay, and they but they wear a mask, right?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I don't want to be anonymous, um, but just their like what they their impact on a lot of people and just like in the as their like genre, the metal genre, because they're pretty blended.
SPEAKER_06You mentioned being able to sell out. I've never been to their show. Like, I know of sleep token. I haven't really explored their music yet because I've been busy. Um how like large venues would you say they're selling out?
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean, they're like arenas. So I think they played out Amy's.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's not a small arena. That's not small. So you want to be able to play it like an Amelie size. Oh, yeah, that'd be awesome.
SPEAKER_01Oh, didn't you change your name? I don't know. Oh, I've always known it as you can.
SPEAKER_06I think the ch I think like the contracts or something like expire like every five to ten years, and it used to be someone else like bought it. Yeah, it used to be something else, and yeah, I think it's still I don't know.
SPEAKER_01But you knew what I was talking about. I know exactly.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, our our arena here in Tampa, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yes, okay.
SPEAKER_06Okay, so what is something about being in a van that most people get completely wrong? Um like us fans, right? Like we think it's so great. Like I would think it would be great to be in a van, but like why could I be wrong about that?
SPEAKER_01Well, you're a lot more broke than you would think.
SPEAKER_06A lot of uh fans out here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, not even just being in a band, but especially if you're in a band, uh don't expect to be making money, at least especially right away.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01Uh a lot of it is kind of just eating shit for a while and you know, just kind of rolling with the punches. Uh yeah, like not not expecting like money from people really, because you're not gonna get paid really what you think you deserve.
SPEAKER_06So at this level, it's you're doing it for the love of like playing.
SPEAKER_01You gotta always need to remember that it's for like the passion and like the art. So when you go when you get into it for money, that's when you're gonna get disappointed for sure.
SPEAKER_06I would I would think so. Um, yeah, if if you're not getting paid yet, because I'm like, I gotta have another job and play in this band. That's a lot of work.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I don't I don't like to work, so there's that.
SPEAKER_01No, I don't think anyone does.
SPEAKER_06All right. So what is a challenge that I would say either your band or you personally that you've overcome that your fans probably don't know about?
SPEAKER_01Um a challenge. I guess uh just kind of getting like music videos, like the visions out, like how like the way you're imagining it. Because a lot of the times uh going into a music video, you think like, oh, I want the shot to look like this, and like I want the the vibe of this to be like this or whatever. It doesn't always come out exactly the way you're imagining it, but if you can get to like a good um, I guess common ground, like with everyone else, and like kind of just compromise for some of the things sometimes it's a little bit out of like budget or okay, impractical or something like that. So um being able to kind of just pivot when you need to and like be okay with it not being perfect.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, because I feel like when I when I listen to music, I feel like I can envision like a movie playing to a song, right? And so that's kind of how you have the vision while you're making the song and recording it.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_06And then trying to translate that into real life can be difficult.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. It's a lot harder than it would seem.
SPEAKER_06So would you say that it's harder? Um, like when you said like maybe there's like a certain shot where it's like not within budget or it's just not practical to do, yeah. It's probably more difficult at like the level of like a beginning band, right? Yeah. To get some of the things financially.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um because like a lot of these other uh bigger bands, they have like a crazy budget. So they can like really have a lot more wiggle room for that stuff. But like for example, on our most recent music video that we're trying to shoot, we you know, our vocalist wants to hang from the ceiling with like wings and stuff, and she wants to do all that. And it's gonna be it's a little hard. Like we don't have that like we don't have like the harnesses and like all that stuff yet. So we're still waiting to shoot that, but it's probably gonna be a little different than the way she's imagining it. So I can kind of see.
SPEAKER_06Have you you've guys done a music video before? Yeah, we've done a few. So just out of curiosity, because I know absolutely nothing about like the like I said, I'm a I'm a fan, right? I'm a fan that's just happened to be interviewing bands, so I don't actually know much about the the costs of the of the business. What would you say for like a beginner band? Or I shouldn't say beginner, you guys aren't beginners, but emerging band is the word I'm looking for. Like, what kind of budget do you have for like a music video?
SPEAKER_01I mean, well, we kind of I mean we spent like your last video, what was the last video was like 800. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06Just for like the like the bare minimum kind of thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like just just for the time and like the location and then like the a little bit of the props that they had at like the warehouse.
SPEAKER_06So what's your budget for this video?
SPEAKER_01The next video, uh probably around like two, three grand.
SPEAKER_06Oh, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's not that's not terrible.
SPEAKER_06But wait, so you said warehouse. Is there like a warehouse that's filled with like musical props for bands?
SPEAKER_01Yes, there's uh there's shout out big black warehouse.
SPEAKER_06Big black warehouse.
SPEAKER_01Big black warehouse.
SPEAKER_06I know there is somebody watching this like this girl is such an idiot. No, no, no, no. Nothing. But I I am very honest, I don't know anything, and I'm like, I'm really enjoying learning about this. So there's a warehouse for people that are shooting music videos.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, here in Florida in Punta Gorda, there's a guy named Toddy who shoots a lot of music videos, and and uh our friend Eric who lit, he's uh he has like a property in there that has a warehouse and all this other stuff, and uh so yeah, Toddy owns it. Yeah, yeah, we shot a lot of bands do it. Um but yeah, it's Toddy owns it, and then we shot with our friend Eric who also lives there. He's a great uh videographer as well. So we're we're shooting with Toddy for this next one, but our previous two music videos were with Eric and he did all the editing, shot it all, all the lighting and stuff. So he he's really good. But um, yeah, there the the warehouse is called the big black warehouse, and it's run by Toddy. So shout out them.
SPEAKER_06Are there any brand new bands out there that's wondering how do we get a music video done? Head up Big Black Warehouse.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, either DM DM them or just DM Toddy directly on Instagram. Yeah, tell them yes, name drop me and he'll get a discount.
SPEAKER_06Name drop Travis. All right, so if your music was food, what would it be?
SPEAKER_01Chicken Parm.
SPEAKER_06Chicken Parm?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Like the current band, you guys would be chicken parm.
SPEAKER_01Chicken Parm, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Please explain that.
SPEAKER_01Uh that's the first food that came to mind. It's also a very solid choice. I don't think you can really go wrong with chicken parm.
SPEAKER_06That is a solid choice, actually.
SPEAKER_01And you know, actually, I'm gonna make this correlation here. So chicken parm is is probably pretty universally accepted as a great dish, and that's how I want our band to be is universally accepted as a good band.
SPEAKER_06Listen, it here's the funny thing about these questions. It sounds really random, and you're like, it was the first thing I could think of, but there was a reason why that popped into mind first. See, and you just figured that out. That's what you want your your band to be, is just like universally accepted.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I like it.
SPEAKER_06I like it. Chicken Farm is really good.
SPEAKER_01It is really good.
SPEAKER_06Although I do make a I do make a vegan version, so uh, I like to save the chickens, but no judgment. I don't judge anybody for eating regular chicken. So um, so you guys have been out on one tour in the in Caleb's parents RV, right? Yes, yes. Um, what would be your most controversial tour van tour opinion?
SPEAKER_01Uh just staying clean, honestly.
SPEAKER_06Is that difficult?
SPEAKER_01It's a little difficult. Uh for one, we did that during the summer and it was very, very hot. Um like it is right now. Yes, exactly like it is right now. It's actually we literally toured at I think the the month after this in July.
SPEAKER_06So was it like last year? Yeah, last year.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, literally around this time, it was really bad. Um, but we also like there's there's there were uh it's not good to really shower on the RVs because of like the like the septic tank and oh the black water tank, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Because then you have to stop and empty it and all that stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So um we stopped at like you know, truck stops, um like trail, like nature trail stops areas, like like that.
SPEAKER_06Campsites, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and just use their um bathrooms and showers and stuff.
SPEAKER_06So is that like something that you like to do or you wish it was something else?
SPEAKER_01Uh I mean in a perfect world we'd have a a huge bus that has everything we need.
SPEAKER_06It has everything, yeah. I think even bigger bands still have like they do like the they rent a a hotel room and it's like the shower room. At least that's what somebody in a bigger band told me once because I was like, how does this work? I was so curious.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, because those those buses that have everything are so expensive, like insane.
SPEAKER_06I can imagine. Yeah, it's I mean, I like I know how much this costs me. Um, I mean, one, not just to build, but um to maintain it. It is not, and then if something goes wrong in the electrical, Jesus Christ. Oh my god. Luckily, I've done everything myself so I can fix it because I probably didn't do it right the first place.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So I know how to fix it.
SPEAKER_04That's good.
SPEAKER_06All right. So who would you say in your band works the hardest behind the scenes?
SPEAKER_01Me.
SPEAKER_06You work the hardest.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah? Why why do you say that?
SPEAKER_01I say that because uh I do a lot of the writing.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_01Uh I like this is a joke. I'm not saying not I'm not trying to be egotistical.
SPEAKER_06But no, if you think you work the hardest, there's nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I I do. I do work really hard, but we all work really hard. Um I'm just I'm just being like more biased for myself because I I do a lot of the like the writing. Uh I do Nadine, Nadine does a lot of the editing, but um, like for social media. Right. Um, but and I like bring all I bring most of the equipment to shows. Um, I try to like uh like make new ways for us to like improve and like have more like connections like just with promoters and stuff.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um I mean, I think that's like the confidence that you have to say that you work the hardest. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm just uh and I don't want to call girls as well.
SPEAKER_06No, don't be comfortable. No, because uh Nadine had a very difficult time answering that question. She didn't want to say herself, not because she doesn't think that she works the hardest, yeah, but she's like, you know, a little self-conscious.
SPEAKER_01And no, they they they both work really hard. But I think we all work really hard.
SPEAKER_06Caleb, you all think that you all work hard, right? Obviously, together. Um, but yeah, like I don't somebody has to be like the hardest worker. And if you think it's yourself, that's great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06There's nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_01I would say myself.
SPEAKER_06There's nothing wrong with that. I promise you. That's not an egotistical.
SPEAKER_01They're not they're gonna knock that answer.
SPEAKER_06All right, so um to your fans, you I know that you guys have a music video coming up and you're gonna play your new song tonight. Is there anything else about like something that's coming up that you want the fans to know about?
SPEAKER_01Um, I guess just I think Caleb touched on it earlier. Uh, just an album that we're working on that is including the new song that we're putting out.
SPEAKER_06Oh, so you're not just putting out a single, you're gonna put out a whole album.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, by the end of it, it's gonna be a full album. Oh, okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_06They actually did not mention about the single and the music video, but they did not at well, at least maybe they didn't want to say that. Maybe I might hear it in editing, but I probably just didn't hear it or something. Sorry. I swear I do pay attention.
SPEAKER_01Maybe maybe they didn't want to say that, but I'll say it.
SPEAKER_06They were just talking about the music video. They were like uh Nudine was really excited about the music video. Oh yeah. Um yeah, so it's it's not that they didn't want to say it, they think they were just focused on other things, but a full-length album that's very great for your fans to hear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. By the end, we're we're just releasing it in single format, but but once it's all out, it's gonna be all in one under one album.
SPEAKER_06Okay, cool. Yeah, cool. Well, I'm really excited, and uh I should be able to see you guys tonight at 8 30 at the Orpheum. Obviously, this is not gonna come out until like, I don't know, August sometime. I have no idea. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Oh, then it'll probably be well album probably won't be out by then. But it's a couple of the singles will probably be out by then.
SPEAKER_06Well, I hope that you guys enjoy the singles. I'm really like you guys have talked up this music video, so I'm very interested in seeing the work video trying to go all out for that.
SPEAKER_01Like I'm we're literally building stairs for it. What? So like out of wood and stuff.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's so cool. Yeah, that is so cool. Well, shout out to everybody that's helping you guys behind the scenes to make this vision come true. Yep. Shout out Toddy, Eric, Ty, Christian, Eric, Two Coma Waves, big big black black warehouse warehouse. Yes. All the people that I am forgetting.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_06Well, thank you so much for being here. I really appreciate you guys taking time out of your day. I'm really sorry that it's like brutally hot in here.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, the fan these two fans right here are making a good and this cold water.
SPEAKER_06Yes, I I tried to I try to have good hospitality. Yes. Well, thank you so much for being here, Travis. It's been great, and I can't wait to see you guys tonight.
SPEAKER_01Oh, thank you. I think for having me.
SPEAKER_06Bye.
SPEAKER_03Closing the phone!
SPEAKER_06Hey everyone, I am back in the van. I'm back from my summer travels. Had a fantastic time with my mom, my sister, my bestie, uh, while we went around in France, and then I spent some time in the UK by myself. And now I am back in the van and I'm ready to start interviewing some more bands. I just finished uh volume five with Rivera. Did I say it right? Oh my god, I swear to God, I cannot say this band's name to save my life, and it makes absolutely no sense why I can't. Um, but just a few notes. They were so great. Um, they're really young and they're, you know, just started out on their journey and they have so much to learn, but I think they're going to do great. Um, it's so interesting to see how how I talk about how nervous I am being in front of the camera and meeting Nadine, and she is very quiet, quiet, and very shy. And then I saw them after the interview, and she gets on stage, and I'm like, who exactly is this shy girl? I don't see it on stage, so that that's great. I mean, she's probably meant to do this, and they're just really great, they sound great. I still I don't know if that new music video has come out yet. Um, I've kind of been um not really paying attention on social, so I have to see if that music video ever came out because I definitely want to see it, and I want to see if she ended up hanging from anything. Um, but it was overall, it was a great interview. Those were this was the last interview in that first two weekends where I did a stretch of interviews. So um I definitely after editing learned things that I wanted to like to move forward and a few things that I'd like to change, switch up the format just a little bit so to keep everything fresh and entertaining. So I'm really excited to see what is coming up next. So I have uh some more bands to interview this coming weekend and hopefully one next week, and then I am going to be hitting the road for a little bit. I need to uh go hike and go be in nature and do some um landscape photography that I enjoy doing, and then I am wanting to interview some bands out on the road. So if you know of any bands that are in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Chicago, I might make it to Detroit. I don't really know if I'm gonna go that far north yet. But if there are any bands in those areas that you think would be great for bands in the van, I uh let me know and I will reach out to them and see if they're interested and see if our schedules align. So I'm just really excited where the project is going. Thank you guys so much for your continued support and make sure you don't forget to follow Bands in the Van for the latest interviews. Thank you so much again. Stay heavy. I'll see you down the road.
